The Shardworlds are the huge lumps of rock afloat in the Deadspell Storm, all revolving around the Shardworld of Quarterstone, and are also known as Shardrealms. Currently there are five known Shardworlds: Mount-of-Heroes, Parliament, Quarterstone, Ringfell, Carnyx and Hood's Belfrey.

An old arms master you once knew described an average enclave realm as a walnut; the nutshell being the Carapace that protects the realm from the Deadspell Storm; the hollow space within the shell is called the Levee, and the citified 'fruit' of the walnut is called the Oppidan. - First Journey

Composition of a Typical Shard

Shards are not directly exposed to the Deadspell, this is likely because the rocks in the storm would crash into the shards from time to time, and the most protected areas are those deep within the shards themselves.

Oppidan

These are the isles within the shards where people reside - each world can be made up of several isles, depending on the size of the shard and the amount of habitable surface on them.

Outer Carapace

The outer surface of the shard, the rocky shell that is the only identifier of the shard from the outside. Since the towns are deep inside, they cannot be seen easily outside the shard itself.

Focal Apertures

These provide the light for the shardworld, as there is no light source inside the shards themselves. These apertures (or holes) allow very little else through other than light, and weave their way through the carapaces to the levee inside.

Levee

The levee is the space between the carapace and the oppidan, and can vary in size depending on the size of the oppidan and the shard itself. This space usually penetrates through to the surface of shards, which is the only way they can be entered.

Inner Carapace

This is the internal wall of the shard, which is the same shell as that on the outside. This is the external limit of the shard inhabitants' view, their horizon and sky, so to speak.
