A High House or House refers to one of the five governing factions in control of the Enclave of the Five Sacrifices. Each House is in turn responsible for looking after its members (of which several are grouped into guilds following the House's ideals) and promoting its interests across the Enclave. People can join a House of their choosing, and are initiated into the House through a rite of passage.
The five High Houses
Each House has its own unique identity. While the structures of Houses tend to be similar, their practices, customs, culture and people are all quite different.
Maul, the High House of Ropes
Members of Maul believe in individual freedom, responsibilities and tradition. They believe that people should be left free to live their lives as they see fit, but that there are certain things which much be punished severely, such as theft and vandalism.
Rune, the High House of Shrines
Rune believes in spirit and conviction. It believes that whatever it is that drives a being, be it conflict, trade or science, none of these can be impure as long as one does them for the Enclave and for the ancestors. The traditions of the High House of Shrines are more cult-like and fabulous than those of the other clans.
Shroud, the High House of Leaves
The Shroud is convinced that every being in the Enclave is in need of something and that common goals and traditions connect these needs. They see trade and politics as a means of making the Enclave healthy. Though Shroud values the strength of the warrior, they see more merit in a learned, guileful approach.
Silver, the High House of Moons
Silver believes in trade above all else and encourages their people and members to seek advantage in any and every opportunity. Among the Silver, you will find traders and jewelers, herdsmen and peasants, but also warriors and mercenaries.
Torque, the High House of Scales
The High House of Scales has a track record of creating heroes, rulers and champions. Yet, in spite of their competitive nature, they understand the need for stability and structure. Members of Torque would defend other clans of the Enclave regardless of the cost or gain.
The Eight Houses
Along with the five houses listed above, three others, five hundred years ago following the destruction of the Altar of Undying, opposed the efforts of Maul, Rune, Shroud, Silver and Torque. These Houses, which are also known as the Lost High Houses, are:
